The DRS 2006 Sound Processor Plugin

The DRS 2006 Sound Processor is an optional plugin for the DRS 2006 radio automation software Version 4 and higher. This plugin includes an automatic gain control (AGC), a compressor and an equalizer.

The automatic gain control (AGC) is an adaptive system found in many electronic devices. The average output signal level is fed back to adjust the gain to an appropriate level for a range of input signal levels. For example, without AGC the sound emitted from an AM radio receiver would vary to an extreme extent from a weak to a strong signal; the AGC effectively reduces the volume if the signal is strong and raises it when it is weaker. The Compressor reduces the volume of loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds by narrowing or "compressing" an audio signal's dynamic range. The Equalizer filters and amplifiers are used to alter the relative strengths of different frequencies in an electronic signal. The Equalizer is used to fine-tune the signal to compensate for distortions such as weak response or oversensitivity at various frequencies.

After activating this plugin you will have a new ribbon in your DRS 2006 software which looks like this:

DRS 2006 Sound Processor Plugin

This ribbon has 4 different sections (Load & Save, Compressor, Equalizer and AGC)

Load & Save
In this section you can load and save your complete sound processor settings (Compressor, Equalizer and AGC). To save your current settings you click on the floppy disk icon and insert your settings name. After this procedure your settings should be selectable in the drop down box. If you want to delete a setting, you simply click on the red cross and confirm that you want to delete.

General knob control
There are 3 ways how you can adjust the sound processor settings with the knobs.
First you use the mouse to click on one of the knobs and then you can:
1. Use the mouse wheel up and down
2. Use the arrow keys (left, right, up and down)
3. Click directly on the mark of the knob and move the virtual knob in a circular motion

Compressor
In the Compressor section you can adjust all settings for the Compressor. To turn the Compressor on, you need to press the button above the drop down box next to "Active". As soon as the Compressor is active, the button will turn green. With the drop down button you can select different presets. The arrow button will hide and show the knobs of this section.

Compressor

The Compressor has 6 knobs you can use to adjust the settings
1. Gain (dB) - The output gain of the signal after the compression
2. Attack (ms) - The time before the compression reaches its full value
3. Predelay (ms) - The time after the threshold is reached before the attack phase is started
4. Ratio - The compression ratio
5. Release - The time (speed) at which compression is stopped after the input drops below threshold
6. Threshold (dB) - The point at which the compression begins

Equalizer
In the Equalizer section you can adjust all settings for the Equalizer. To turn the Equalizer on, you need to press the button above the drop down box next to "Active". As soon as the equalizer is active, the button will turn green. With the drop down button you can select different presets. The arrow button will hide and show the knobs of this section.

Equalizer

The Equalizer has 9 knobs you can use to adjust the settings
1. Gain (dB) - The output gain - LOW
2. Width (st) - The bandwidth in semitones - LOW

3. Center (Hz) - The center frequency - LOW
4. Gain (dB) - The output gain - MID
5. Width (st) - The bandwidth in semitones - MID
6. Center (Hz) - The center frequency - MID
7. Gain (dB) - The output gain - HIGH
8. Width (st) - The bandwidth in semitones - HIGH
9. Center (Hz) - The center frequency - HIGH

Automatic Gain Control (AGC)
In the AGC section you can adjust all settings for the AGC. To turn the AGC on, you need to press the button above the drop down box next to "Active". As soon as the AGC is active, the button will turn green. With the drop down button you can select different presets. The arrow button will hide and show the knobs of this section.

Automatic Gain Control

The Automatic Gain Control (AGC) has 5 knobs you can use to adjust the settings
1. Gain (dB) - The amplification level
2. Delay (s) - The time before increasing the level

3. Predelay (dB) - The quiet volume level
4. Rate - The amplification adjustment rate
5. Target (dB) - The target volume
